Israel: Opposition leader slams Peres comments on Armenians massacre by Turks Jerusalem, Meretz Chairman Yosi Sarid this evening sharply criticized Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, who said that the accusations levelled by the Armenians against the Turks were meaningless, and that although what happened to the Armenians was indeed a tragedy, it does not constitute genocide.
At a memorial service in Yafo marking the 86th anniversary of the Armenian
Massacre, Sarid said that Peres was not a historian and described the
foreign minister's assertions as arbitrary and baseless. Many Israelis are ashamed
of Shimon Peres' remarks, Sarid said. This was reported by our correspondent
Yaron Deqel.
