He zealously pursued the study of the chemistry of the colon, cell mitosis and cell destruction by carcinogenic substances. Nature was his school and he tapped this vast storehouse unceasingly. Till it gradually drew him away from Crypticism and his import-export business.
Joseph de Varda propounded a new theory, something he has been extensively researching for the last 12 years. According to him cancer can be cured through colonic irrigation an inexpensive, painless and quick procedure.

Those who sighted the germs of a revolutionary concept were scared to touch it. de Varda’s was but a voice in the wilderness. It wasn’t until The DAILY Interview of Sunday last (September 16) titled ’I can cure cancer’ that the medical fraternity and the public at large got up to take another look. The DAILY met with a deluge of telephone calls. The DAILY meanwhile spent more time with de Varda, and garnered knowledge about the miraculous curative prowess of garlic not only in the treatment of cancer but also in the prevention and cure of a host of other diseases.

The last two issues of the DAILY SUNDAY MAGAZINE (dated September 16 and 23) scooped in detail the startling discovery of Australian cancer researcher Joseph de Varda. Acording to de varda the treatment of cancer deserves a simple yet carefully executed three ponged strategy. To begin with the colon or large intestine should be cleansed of accumulated layers of hard faecal matter. The dungeon-like recess of the colon is the ideal breeding ground for disease causing bacteria. It can be washed and rid of the harmful bacteria by colonic irrigation.
The tree-pronged attack on cancer consists of colonic irrigation for cleansing the colon, garlic for purifying the blood and bran for stimulating the gastrointestinal tract. In one lifetime the human being contracts cancer thousands of times but the body wards off the worst with its sophisticated defence mechanism.
Remember, the body is the best computer ever produced by nature. Don’t trifle with it.

The Daily spent time with him to understand better his controversial discovery. Varda stretches every point, a rich French accent and expansive gestures coating his drawl. ”There is something I must share with your readers” he insists as long shadows slip into his hotel room. ”Swallow a piece of garlic every morning on an empty stomach. Drown it in a few glasses of water. It contains allyl disulphate, the best antibiotic produced by nature. The diet must contain some form of calcium and sea salt”.
Excerpts from the interview follow.
The Daily: You claim to have a cure for cancer.
Joseph de Varda: Yes, that’s right. It took me 12 years to discover a way not only to cure cancer but to prevent it as well.
What is your method?
My solution is simple. Perhaps far too simple for acceptance by a society hypnotised by technological complexities and drug formulations. The prevention and cure of all types of cancer except skin cancer can be achieved by the introduction into the colon lukewarm water previously boiled to kill any harmful bacteria. The aim is to irrigate and clean the clogged colon of accumulated layers of putrified faecal matter. You see, cancer is not a disease as such but the final manifestation of a long and complicated poisoning process that has its origin in the metabolism of putrefactive bacteria in the colon. By regularly removing these bacteria and their breeding ground we greatly reduce the production and built-up of toxins in the body resulting in a healthy immune system. Skin cancer is caused by the ultraviolet rays of the sun and largely affects Anglo-Saxons or white skinned people who should avoid a prolonged stay in the sun.
Your method seems far too simple. How has it not been discovered previously?
Medical science has largely ignored the study of the chemistry of the colon in my opinion it is an important field of research that should never be neglected.
How is it that the colon harbours carcinogenic elements?
In the lower part of the small bowel and in the entire colon there exist thousands of billions of bacteria of different species that multiply fast in the dark, warm and airless recesses. The waste products derived from undigested food naturally reach the colon where they undergo putrefaction or fermentation depending upon whether the bacteria living in the colon act more vigorously on proteins (putrefaction) or on carbohydrates substances (fermentation). Bacteria are designed as putrefactive (harmful) or fermentative (beneficial).
These putrefactive bacteria produce and release into the bloodstream an enormous quantity of toxins which can settle in any part of the body. The toxins attack all molecules including DNA and RNA molecules. The damage is total and leads to cancer. The putrefactive bacteria transforms cholesterol and bile acids into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which are converted by paracetic acid to epoxides (the most active carcinogens) industrially known as epoxy resins.
FINAL BREAKDOWN With the release of these highly toxic substances in the colon an enormous amount of diverse chemical reactions occur producing carcinogenic agents such as alkyl, acyl and aryl agents, azo and diazo compounds, amines (nitrosamines) as well as a host of other agents still unknown to science. All these agents are easily absorbed in the bloodstream and may settle in any part of the body altering and hindering the normal functions of the cells, enzymes, antibodies, hormones etc with the eventual breakdown of the body’s defence system. It is common knowledge that faecal matter builds up in pockets and coats the entire length of the colon. As it accumulates on the inside walls a toxic, stagnant hard, black muck is formed. Those toxins get into the bloodstream where they combine with enzymes, antibodies, hormones etc. and slightly or extremely alter their chemical structure causing them to lose their physiological activity. I think that explains completely the toxicity produced in the colon.
How does one clean the colon?
Prior to having the enema one should drink three glasses of water to saturate the body with it. This prevents, in the later stages of enema, the absorption of faecal matter into the bloodstream. After that one can of lukewarm water is to be introduced into the colon followed by an immediate evacuation of the bowels. The introduction of the second, third and fourth can into the colon follows the first two steps. This helps in softening the hard muck of faecal matter. In a cancer patient the procedure should be repeated till recovery. The procedure is inexpensive painless and takes very little time.
After a colonoscopy examination, if the colon is found to be free from faecal matter, the patient must stop further colonic irrigation. This will enable beneficial bacteria to grow and multiply and thereby strengthen the body.
Will the cleaning of the colon aid in the treatment of other ailments?
Definitely. The toxins and carcinogens produced in the colon are a factor in the birth of nearly every disease. I have even cured a diabetic through this process.
What about infants who suffer from cancer?
Offspring inherit maternally identical bacteria in the colon. Those harmful bacteria produce carcinogenic substances.
Has your theory been accepted by medical science?
It is not a theory as such. I have factual evidence of my findings and can prove to medical science how toxins from the colon can cause damage to cells. I am not a doctor but my inquisitive mind aided by my study in chemistry led me to this discovery. Chemistry controls everything. Billions of chemical reactions take place in our body every minute of our lives. I have successfully treated 78 cancer patients. Within weeks the entire chemistry of their body altered and the normal functioning of their cells, enzymes, antibodies, hormones and the entire immune system automatically resumed.
How have renowned cancer specialists taken to your claims?
In the Western world the concept of colonic irrigation is not readily accepted by the medical profession.
Lukewarm water cannot be sold. If the medical profession accepted me they wouldn’t make any profit.
Why have you come to India?
I felt I could meet with instant recognition in a Third World country not greatly influenced by drug companies. Moreover, colonic irrigation is practised by yogis, and many Indian doctors realise the beneficial aspects.
Has your visit been worth it?
Oh yes. On my arrival in Bombay I contacted many doctors, surgeons, pathologists and chemists. They have evinced interest in my findings and have decided to join me in carrying on the fight against cancer.
You are primarily a businessman. How did you get involved with a cure for cancer?
Ever since a family friend died of cancer, literally in my arms, the word cancer has been an obsession, an obsession that has been with me from childhood.
If your cure is recognised as a breakthrough rewards will be yours for the asking. Is that your aim?
To silence the eternal cynics I would like to mention that I do not expect any financial rewards for my findings. I am not connected with the manufacturing or distribution of enemas or colonic irrigation clinics. Neither do I crave fame and recognition. My advice is freely given to those who still possess ears to listen and eyes to see.

The Daily met with a deluge of telephone calls, and at Nataraj Hotel where de Varda was put up instructions were given to provide a blanket reply to the overwhelming number of queries – that Joseph de Varda had already left. The Daily meanwhile spent more time with Varda, and prior to his departure garnered knowledge about the miraculous curative prowess of garlic not only in the treatment of cancer but also in the prevention and cure of a host of other diseases.

“I can’t describe the miraculous powers of garlic. It is simply beyond words. A single bulb is stronger than an atom or hydrogen bomb and kills without bullets: an invaluable weapon gifted by nature to exterminate harmful bacteria.
“History reveals that the first industrial dispute took place over garlic. Around the year 3000 B.C., during the construction of the famous Egyptian pyramid ‘Cheos’, the labour struck work. The supply of garlic, their wonder drug, was discontinued. One tiny clove provided them the necessary strength, stamina and endurance. Their very lives depended on its vital force. Without it they were useless.
“Again, during the world wars when antibiotics were scarce, medicines in short supply and people dying like flies, garlic emerged as the saviour. Within weeks it healed wounds and infectious diseases as thousands of soldiers lay sprawled on the battlefields dying.
FOUR THIEVES VINEGAR
“In 1721 in Marseilles, France large numbers were swept to their graves by the plague. Their burial became a gigantic problem as manpower was scarce. The authorities, in a last ditch effort, selected four convicts sentenced to death by the guillotine to do the job. “To the astonishment of the establishment the four met with success. Bodies fell like bricks around them but somehow they were immune to the plaque. It was much later that the truth came to light. The convicts were subsisting on stolen wine and crushed garlic, a concoction now immortalised and marketed under the name Vinaigre des quatres Voleurs - literally translated into ‘Four Thieves Vinegar’.
“From time immemorial garlic has been worshipped by different cultures. Some people wore it around their necks to drive away the evil eye and the Assyrians, the Romans, the Babylonians and the Greeks used it profusely in their diets.
“Garlic is an amazing antiseptic that destroys harmful bacteria in seconds. During my experiments I was amazed by its potential. It annihilates pathogenic bacteria and stimulates the growth of beneficial ones. “It contains nature’s antibiotic – Allyl Disulphate – that can, within seconds, kill pathogens. It has two enzymes – Allin and Allicin – crushed and combined together to form an antiseptic.
“However, garlic has no nutritive value. It contains very little vitameins and minerals. Its strength lies in its supreme germicidal qualities thanks to its high content of volatile sulphur oil. It is the perfect antidote and unlike other antibiotics is devoid of side-effects. On the contrary, it rids the body of the side-effects generated by antibiotics and other drugs.
“Apart from pathogenic bacteria, garlic also kills amoeba and parasites which flourish in the drinking water in India. It brings down high blood pressure, lowers serum cholesterol level, aids in the digestive process, fights TB, pneumonia, typhus, diptheria, diarrhoea, dysentry, bronchitis and every disease ending with ‘itis’. Asthma, diabetes (organic sulphur is necessary for the production of insulin hormones) and cardiac ailments are also conquered by this little food. It is also a powerful weapon against flatulence or excessive gas. It is advisable to take sea salt with garlic.
“Feet and underarm odour caused by the toxins thrown up from the putrefaction in the colon also disappear, of course after colonic irrigation and the intake of garlic. Garlic stops the odour.
“During my visit in Africa I used garlic on lepers. Within weeks of their consumption and application of garlic the infectious parts healed. Once more I looked at nature in wonderment, in awe of its inherent healing qualities. Garlic stimulates the secretion of enzymes, hormones and digestive juices including bile acids. For inflamed chest, throat, mouth and nasal disorders one half of a clove of raw garlic lodged in the mouth, between the gums and the inside of the cheek, will have strong, antiseptic curative properties.”
“There is something else, never discovered before. After the consumption of small quantities of garlic the level of selenium in the body miraculously increases. Selenium is anti-oxidant, an element extremely necessary for the proper functioning of the entire immune system. It forms part of a protective enzyme called Glutathione Peroxides that protect the body from peroxides which are formed by abnormal oxidation (destruction) of body fats and oils. Peroxidized fats and oils, unprotected by this enzyme, paralyses and suppresses the immune system and creates a defenceless body leading to cancer. This is certainly a miracle because garlic contains only a small quantity of selenium.”
“Now, coming to cancer, I want to emphasise that cancer is not a virus, bacteria or a parasite. A normal cell becomes cancerous during a revolt against the toxins produced by the bacteria growing in the large intestine or the colon.”
“In its cure colonic irrigation is a must. The faecal matter accumulated in the colon has to be got rid of. The garlic introduced later will control the growth of harmful bacteria in the colon and automatically assist in the production of beneficial bacteria which in turn will produce an enormous quantity of vitamins and other necessary substances for the body. Even though garlic possesses tremendous curative properties it can also cause harm if consumed in large doses, say about 3 cloves a day. Sulphur is a pale yellow non-metallic element. Being a destroying element it must be noted that it can deliver lethal blows to cells in the body. Therefore, at no cost should one consume excess garlic.”
“The body absorbs sulphur through sulphur-containing amino acids (proteins) such as cysteine, methione and other organic compounds. Sulphur by itself is poisonous.”
“A clove of garlic should be cut into two pieces and swallowed with the peel. It is best to consume it before meals, but not more than three cloves a day. It is necessary that the peel remains. This prevents the absorption of the clove both in the stomach and the small intestine. The sulphur vapours emitted by the garlic from the colon instantly kills the bad bacteria and prepares the right environment for the good bacteria to grw and flourish.”
“To complete the cure a clove of garlic should be inserted into the rectum after a colonic irrigation. The procedure is simple. Pierce an unpeeled clove of garlic with a fork and hold it over a flame. Burn the skin till it is charcoal black. Peel it and inset a threaded needle through its middle. Remove the needle and aided by a little bit of soap push the clove into the rectum. Peristaltic movement soon carry it into the colon. The sulphur vapours generated by the garlic will reach every part of the colon and ascend the digestive tracts. This method is ideal particularly for those who are unable to have a colonic irrigation due to perforation or part removal of the colon. The clove can be removed easily by pulling the string that runs through it.”
“The external application of garlic also helps in the cure of skin cancer and other skin diseases. If a terminal patient is unable to eat or have colonic irrigation, crushed garlic can be rubbed on the soles of his feet. Its volatile acids will penetrate the entire system. It is vital that garlic is consumed raw because once it is cooked it loses its germicidal properties.

The intake of unpeeled, half-cut garlic will control the growth of putrefactive bacteria in the colon and assist in the multiplication of beneficial bacteria which will generate vitamins B, K, and other substances necessary for the body.
Raw fibre in the diet (bran) provides nutrients to the beneficial bacteria, adds bulk to the stools and stimulates the peristaltic movements of the colon. This facilitates prompt and easy evacuation. The procedure which revels in its simplicity and makes a mockery of medical science almost seems incredible. But Joseph de Varda, during his extensive research, discovered that the toxins isolated from the faecal matter were identical to those appearing in the blood and tissues. It was then that it struck him that those toxins derived from the colon instigated the growth of abnormal cells (cancer) in the body and attacked cellular DNA resulting in altered and deformed chromosomes. Cancer easily develops when genetic blueprints that control cell division are damaged. Having covered the first two steps, ie. colonic irrigation and intake of garlic in the previous issues of the Daily, let us examine the anatomy of fibre foods.
What is fibre?
Fibre is a complex carbohydrate (cellullose) that forms the outer coating of whole grains, the supporting structures of vegetables, fruits, leaves, stems of plants etc. Unlike herbivorous animals, human beings do not possess the appropriate enzymes to digest and break down fibre in the gastro-intestinal tract. The undigested fibres tunnelling through the colon are attacked by the beneficial bacteria and easily digested by them.
Fibre is capable of absorbing and storing large quantities of water which contributes to the softening of the stools. The faecal matter that reaches the colon is part liquid and part solid. The excess liquid is automatically absorbed by the intestinal walls and the solids are passed through the colon stimulating the movement of the muscular walls. The formation of faecal matter in the colon should be semi-liquid. Its prolonged stay may result in a series of undesirable consequences like an increase in bacteria count, formation of toxic substances and hardening of the faecal mass due to loss of water causing constipation, flatulence and irritation to the mucosal lining.
Normal stools should preferably be soft, large in diameter, brown in colour and rapidly excreted from the colon. It generall consists of undigested food residue including fibre, enormous quantities of bacteria (both alive and dead), water, fats, bile acids, intestinal secretions, dead cells, toxins, mucous, nitrogenous compounds and many other substances, both beneficial and harmful to the body.
Floating stools are caused by large amounts of fats which remain undigested due to a lack of the pancreatic wnzyme lipase. Significant physical abnormalities can be detected and identified by the different colours of faecal matter. Colouring is dependent on the intake of food, dyes, drugs and the reaction of certain substances with others.
Brown stools are caused by the presence of stercobilinogen. The reaction of bacteria in the intestine transforms Bilirubin (bile pigment) into stercobilinogen. This is a healthy colour.
Yellow stools occur in infants who are breast-fed. Bile pigments are not altered due to lack of intestinal bacteria and hence the colour.
Green stools are due to the excretion of Biliverdin (bile pigment) in new-born infants or due to the intake of chlorophyll.
Light coloured stools result from the high intake of milk and milk products.
Clay coloured stools are an indication of blockage or an obstructive bile duct and malfunctioning of the liver resulting in excessive fat excretion.
Red stools occur due to the bleeding of the lower part of the colon, rectum and anal passage as in the case of haemorrhoids.
Black stools result from a bleeding of the upper gastro-intestinal tract. They may also be naturally coloured by the intake of iron, charcoal or drugs.
It should however be remembered that the consumption of raw fibre (bran) can have an adverse effect if the anaerobic (harmful) bacteria count in the colon is higher than the aerobic (beneficial) bacteria count. In such a case poisonous methane and other gases will be generated to undesirable limits. Hence, colonic irrigation is a must. The colon must be rid of its accumulated muck. A fact that cannot be overemphasised.
In a low-fibre diet the harmful anaerobic bacteria take over the colon and break down the bile acids into lithocholate which is absorbed and fed back to the liver where it prevents the conversion of cholesterol into bile acids. This contributes to an elevated blood cholesterol level. Strenous bowel evacuation puts pressure on the colon and contributes to the development of haemorrhoids. A fibre-rich diet prevents constipation and its accompanying problems.
Various kinds of dietary fibres differ in their chemical and physical properties as also in their effects on the digestive system. Fibres derived from the husks of grain products with their cellulose roughage content have much greater influence on the size and transit time of stools than vegetable and fruit fibres.
Fruit and vegetable fibres do not assist in the peristaltic movement of the bowel. Ideally, one tablespoon of raw, unprocessed bran should be consumed before breakfast. The intake of bran should only be gradually increased as excess of it creates flatulence as a consequence of the bacterial attack on fibres. Hard faecal matter accumulates in the colon even in the healthiest of people. It is due to one, all or even a combination of the three factors mentioned below:
