Book Description

English

Şurayt, as a language, has a long history of usage in Turabdin and outside Turabdin, in the region known as Northern Mesopotamia. Assyrians (today also known as Syriacs and Chaldeans) and non-Assyrians speakers used it as their vernacular language for thousands of years, but they never wrote it down. This is the key reason why there is little literature available in Şurayt today.

From the early 1980s Jan Beṯ-Şawoce has worked for the revival of Şurayt as a reading and writing language. He has published a magazine (Nsibin – 1987-2006), and numerous books and writings in Şurayt. It is not until recently that Şurayt started to be written, read and also being accepted as a language of its own.

With this book, for the first time, Jan Beṯ-Şawoce presents a historical study in Şurayt. He describes how the debate and dispute concerning Şurayt evolved over the years.

The contents of this book is entirely in the Şurayt (Western Assyrian) language.
