Preface

The Hakkâri Massacres

An anthology of documents related to massacres and deportations of Assyrians in northern Mesopotamia

Ethnic Cleansing by Turkey
1924-25

This book consists of a collection of documents concerning the deportation and massacres of the “Nestorian” Assyrians (but also “Jacobites” and “Chaldeans”) in 1924-25, and the boundary dispute between Iraq and Turkey which affected the Assyrians in the extreme.

I decided to reorganise and reprint this anthology, primarily because the first edition of 2009 had a very limited print run.  Also, the discovery of new documents and information necessitated a new edition.

The events that transpired in Hakkâri were tantamount to a crime against humanity and the Turkish Republic was responsible for this crime.  The  officers and soldiers who took part in the deportation and committed despicable acts, such as massacres, rape and looting, all belonged to the 62nd Regiment of the Turkish infantry.  It was therefore an act committed by the regular army, which was sent by the Ankara Government for this purpose.

The historiographers, as named in the book, who consciously tried to misinform the Turkish public in relation to the atrocities that the army committed, can be regarded as complicit after the fact.
