THOUSANDS of years of Assyrian culture was celebrated at the Assyrian New Year Festival on Monday.

More than 8000 people converged on Fairfield Showground to mark the first day of the ancient Babylonian calendar with a day-long celebration that featured cultural performances, activities and a spectacular fireworks display.

An exhibition of historic relics, organised by the Young Assyrians group, showcased the 6000-year history of Assyrian people, while a dramatic arts piece depicted the arrival of the ancient King and Queen of Assyria.

In a special ceremony, Dr John Atto was awarded the Australian Assyrian of the Year award in recognition of his valuable contribution and for outstanding commitment to the community.

The annual event was hosted by the Assyrian Australian National Federation and the Assyrian Universal Alliance.

Before a large crowd of local and visiting community leaders and politicians, including Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, Alliance deputy secretary general Hermiz Shahen spoke of the adversity faced by Assyrian people and appealed to the Australian government to assist Assyrian and other ethno-religious minorities in Iraq.
