Yerevan, 4 April: Armenia should deal very carefully with international recognition of the genocide of Armenians by Ottoman Turkey in 1915-23, the British ambassador to Armenia, Timothy Jones, has said in an interview with Snark news agency.

He said that he was familiar with the history of the early 1900s and did not doubt that the terrible tragedy had really taken place in Ottoman Turkey. However, he believes that Yerevan's demands to recognize this historical fact
by other countries can cause certain difficulties, particularly in relations between the countries of the region and between individual countries in the world. "I am not saying that this issue should not be raised at all, but I simply mean that it demands an extremely careful and considered approach," Jones said.

Touching upon prospects for the adoption of the Armenian resolution by the British government or parliament, the envoy said that the Cabinet of Ministers had not yet placed the issue of the Armenian genocide on the agenda, but that parliament had been studying this carefully for a long time. It is extremely difficult to forecast how matters will develop, the British diplomat noted.
