This year wasn't an exception either: a memorial evening dedicated to Armenian Genocide 86-th anniversary took place on these days in Tekeyan Center of Yerevan. The ADL Republican board chairman Rouben Mirzakhanian delivered the opening speech of the evening. Talking in detail about the party's position concerning the Armenian genocide, he noted: "The ADL is faithful to the Armenian Cause since the day of its foundation- considering the issue one of the most important ones". The party's Diaspora representatives contribute to the job of making the issue more and more public by carrying out propaganda activity. Assuring that the party is going to be pursuant in the Genocide issue, Rouben Mirzakhanian added that ADL's initiatives and actions in the mentioned issues will be more wide-range, will have special character for the ADL solved all the internal problems of the party at the recent 22-nd General Congress of the party held in Athens. Estimating the congress as unifying the ADL Republican board chairman noted that this achievement will have a great positive influence on the future activity of the party. Then the locum-tenens of Ararat Patriarchal Diocese, Bishop Navasard Kchoyan send a blessing speech to the present. In his report the moderator of the memorial evening, ADL deputy chairman, Yerevan State University's honorable Doctor Ervand Azatian talked not only about the inhuman crime carried out at the beginning of the 20-th century, but also estimated the crime as a logical and predictable solution which should have followed the small and big slaughters of Armenians carried out by Turks at the end of previous 19-th century. Turkey should have solved the Armenian issue, and from today's angle it is more than obvious that Turkey didn't have any other choice but committing a crime never seen before in human history. The moderator touched upon one more issue during his report- finally what was the number of Armenians living in Western Armenia just before the 1915 genocide. In this respect Ervand Azatian quoted a datum of Armenian Diocese Istanbul headquarters (as far as no censuses were being held at those times) , according to which the number of Armenians living in Western Armenia equaled to 2,5 million. This number too, tough, is disputable based on another datum which was given at the eve of signing the Lozan treaty- the number of Armenians was 3 million according to it. Whatever, this doesn't change the fact of existence of 1,5 million victims. "But let's not forget that Armenians fought against Turks then- with unbelievable, unequal forces. Those were self-defense battles of real heroes",- noted Mr. Azatian. Then he talked about present time reality- reporting that now the Armenian Cause is in such a stage where scientific researches and propaganda works have a very important role. In this respect American-Turks operate very actively- they periodically flood US press with such publications and analysis which completely distort the 1915 historical events. Detroit-Armenian Ervand Azatian, being aware of the situation, also added that the Turkish propaganda expressed in publications is being adequately repulsed by the Armenian side. The moderator then talked about US President Bush's electoral campaign promises concerning Armenian genocide- promises that remained unfulfilled. Instead the civilized countries of Europe launched a peculiar marsh against Turkey for not letting it close to European Union; this is why the Armenian genocide issue has a notable progress in several European countries lately.
At the same time the idea that in case of genocide universal recognition
Turkey should not be presented territorial claims or any material
compensation demand is also circulating in foreign countries. What's left to do
in this situation? Ervand Azatian is confident that the propaganda
work should not be halted hereafter "especially now when the foreign
policy of Armenia, thanks to president Kocharian's position, adopted
a clear path of making the Armenian Genocide recognition the number
one issue".
