P.O.Box 14150 In a letter sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs the Commemorative Committee of the Armenian Genocide protested the statements made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr.Shimon Peres.Below is a copy of the letter sent by the Commemorative Committe(of Jerusalem) of the Armenain Genocide. THE LETTER
The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem To: 22nd April, 2001
His Excellency, Mr. Shimon Peres, The Armenian Community of Israel was immensely shocked upon reading in the Turkish Media the official declaration made by you on your recent visit to Turkey about the Armenian Genocide, wherein you state that the Armenian allegations of the Genocide are “meaningless and that there is no similarity between the holocaust and the fate of the Armenians during the First World War. Nothing similar to the holocaust occurred. It is a tragedy what the Armenian went through, not genocide.” We are enclosing two books in which you will find mountains of evidence that such a genocide has taken place, chief among is the eyewitness account of the United States Ambassador to the Ottoman empire Henry Morgenthau, himself a Jew, in his book entitled “Murder of a Nation.” It is worth while to mention here, that it was the denial of the Armenian Genocide that encouraged Hitler to embark on his diabolical scheme of exterminating the Jews in what is known as the Jewish holocaust. It is only by condoning wholesale crimes like these where the perpetrators escape with impunity that more and more crimes are committed clearly depicting man’s inhumanity to man. What we more deplore is that such declarations should come from a responsible official of the State of Israel whose people have suffered the same fate as the Armenian people. We hope that these declarations do not reflect the attitude of the entire Jewish nation, since other government officials, like Mr.Yossi Sarid and Mr.Yossi Beilin, and Jewish academics like Professor Israel Charny and Dr.Yair Auron, have in the past been outspoken proponents of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. We suggest that a reference be made to the United Nations’ definition of the term “Genocide” with all its wider connotations. Commemorative Committee of the Armenian Genocide.
