Armenian genocide is remembered

ATHENS

The Armenian National Committee held a ceremony in Thessaloniki yesterday to commemorate the slaughter of 1.5 million Armenians by Turks in 1915. The ceremony, attended by Defense Minister Akis Tsochadzopoulos, was to mark the April 24 anniversary of the genocide.
Van Coufoudakis, professor of political science at the University of Indiana-Purdue, urged US President George W. Bush to stand by a campaign promise to recognize April 24 as a day to commemorate the Armenian genocide, part of an international effort to have the day recognized.

Tsochadzopoulos said that doing so would not be "an act of hatred."

"Quite the opposite, (such actions) build bridges of friendship and cooperation between nations based on historical truth, and build defenses against policies that lead to genocides," he said.
