PRESS RELEASE
Author of Armenian Genocide Bill to Address House in Honor of
Armenian Commemoration Day
Washington, DC - Rep. George Radanovich (R-CA) will address the House
this evening to pay tribute to the victims of the Armenian Genocide
that began in 1915. Radanovich, author of three Armenian Genocide
resolutions in the House of Representatives since 1995, has urged
President Bush to recognize the massacre as a genocide despite Turkish
pressure to the contrary.
"As a member of Congress, I believe that I have an obligation to
educate and familiarize Americans on the Armenian Genocide,"
Radanovich said. "We must ensure that the legacy of this genocide is
remembered so that this human tragedy is never repeated. This history
must be affirmed, not buried and denied."
Every year on April 24th, Armenians throughout the world commemorate
the nearly complete destruction of their people beginning in 1915.
During the genocide, some 1.5 million Armenians were subjected to
systematic extermination through a policy of deportation, torture,
starvation, and massacre.
"I am proud today to underscore my unwavering support of the
acknowledgment of the 1915-1923 Armenian Genocide as a historical
fact," Radanovich said. "I will continue to work towards this end in
this Congress, and every other in which I serve."
Rep. Radanovich will soon introduce his fourth Armenian Genocide
resolution in as many Congresses. The resolution would bring together
all U.S. records on the genocide to disseminate to the U.S. Holocaust
Museum, the Armenian Genocide Museum, and the like. "U.S. archives
contain extensive documentation of the widespread opposition to
Ottoman Turkey's brutal massacres and deportations," said Radanovich.
"In introducing this resolution, I again challenge those who attempt
to deny genocide, past or present."
