[FBIS Translated Excerpt] France: Over 3,500 demonstrate to urge Turkey
to recognize Armenian genocide
Excerpt from report by French news agency AFP
Paris, 24 April: Over 3,500 people according to the police, 5,000
according to the organizers, commemorated in Paris today, Tuesday, during
a march which lasted more than two hours, the 86th anniversary of the
Armenian genocide, three months after its official recognition by the
French parliament, an AFP correspondent has reported.
In response to the call issued by the 24th April Committee, the
demonstrators began at around 1800 hours [1600 gmt] a "citizens' march"
from the Arc de Triomphe to the Turkish embassy in the 16th district [in
northwest Paris] to call for the recognition of the Armenian genocide in
1915.
They chanted "Ankara we'll get you, Ankara, we won't forget you,
Ankara you will pay" and "Turkey, murderers".
The demonstrators were stopped near the Turkish embassy by an
anti-riot police cordon, and a delegation of five people, which was due
to present a motion for the recognition of the Armenian genocide by
Turkey, was denied access to the embassy.
The protesters started to leave the scene shortly after 2000 hours...
