Referring to recent information published in Turkish Cypriot newspapers,
that there is an increase in the number of Turkish Cypriots having a
passport of the Republic of Cyprus or who have applied for such a passport,
Rauf Dennktash, the so called "leader" of the Turkish Cypriot community,
stated that the Cypriot authorities have to publish the names of the Turkish
Cypriots who have a passport of the Republic of Cyprus. He further added
that it is a mistake for any Turkish Cypriot to have a passport of the
Republic of Cyprus and called on those who have one, to hand it over to the
Turkish occupation authorities. Rauf Denktash finally threatened that any
Turkish Cypriots having passports of the Republic of Cyprus will suffer the
"consequences", since measures are to be taken against them by the Turkish
occupation forces.
The Pan-Cyprian Association for the Protection of Human Rights expresses
deep concern for the above statements, which are considered as a further act
of persecution against the Cypriot population by Turkey, through the Turkish
occupation forces.
The Association calls upon the government of Cyprus to protect its Turkish
Cypriot citizens by refusing to give any information regarding those who
have Cypriot passports.
The Association calls upon the United Nations and the European Union to take
urgent action towards terminating such flagrant violations of the human
rights and fundamental freedoms of the Cypriots by Turkey.
