US opposed to Cyprus EU entry

On May 16, the EU put the Cyprus-EU Accession Negotiations on hold due to "technical reasons". At the same time, the Cypriot press reports
that the US government does not foresee an EU entry for Cyprus, while at the same time is supporting the need for incorporation of Turkey into
European institutions. The position of the US government is a source of concern for the Greek and Cypriot governments. The two governments
are reported to be trying to resort to means of reversal of the climate caused by the US government position. The regime of Raouf Denktas will
attempt to create a climate of tension (ie Greeks and Turks cannot live together in Cyprus) through provocation at the village of Pyla. Pyla,
situated within the British Sovereign Base area and along the green line, is the last remaining village in Cyprus cohabited by Turkish and Greek
Cypriots. It is a challenge to the segragationist dogma of Raouf Denktas and a reminder of the long era of peaceful co-existence of Greeks and
Turks on the island. A second possible target of provocatory acts by the Denktas regime are the last remaining Greek Cypriots (approximately
300 elders) residing in the occupied part of Cyprus (the Karpasia peninsula).
The Turkish Cypriot press is reporting a flurry of activity in northern Cyprus centered around a revival of TMT, the terrorist organization
established by Denktas in the 1950s to eliminate Turkish Cypriot progressives advocating co-existence with Greek Cypriots and to advance
segragation of the native Turks of Cyprus into enclaves as a first step towards partition of the island and undermining of the legitimacy of the
government of the republic. The aim of the current TMT revival is to eliminate the increasing number of Turkish Cypriot voices advocating EU
entry, opposition to the confedaration policy of Denktas/Ankara, terrorization and intimidation of Turkish Cypriots who are applying for
passports from the Republic of Cyprus, and intimidation Turkish Cypriots who have conducts with Greek Cypriots and participate in
bi-communal activities. The main organizer for the TMT revival effort is Taner Etkin, one of the counsellors of the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf
Denktash and former so-called Minister of Foreign Affairs. Taner Etkin has participated in the latest proximity talks.
The persecuted Turkish Cypriot daily newspaper Avrupa (Europe in Turkish) reports that Mr. Etkin visits every village in the occupied Cyprus
and organises meetings in order to register new members . As its founders wish the organisation to remain secret, adds ``Avrupa'', they are
about to ``make it legal'' with the name ``National People's Movement''.
The paper writes that special groups have come especially from Turkey to train the members of the new organisation. However, it is not known
whether these special groups went to the occupied areas ``through the official channels'' or whether civilian officials in Ankara are aware of
these activities, continues ``Avrupa''.
``Political observers are worried that South Cyprus` EU accession course will be very critical for the Turkish Cypriot patriots and that these
secret activities, which are preparing the ground for plots, provocations and bloody crimes, will be increased'', concludes ``Avrupa''.
