Nataph - A beautiful word

Sep-09-2001 at 10:27 PM (UTC+3 Nineveh, Assyria)

I looked up the word 'nataph'in the Strong's Hebrew/Chaldee Dictionary and it seems to denote a saturation-point of divine inspiration upon the speaker who speaks, preaches, teaches, sings, prophesies, or recites poetry. As the moist air of the early morning hours vaporizes and condensates (distils) the dew upon the grass seems to be the word-picture. Are there any parallels or words of similar root in New Testament Aramaic of this fascinating Hebrew word of inspiration?

Shlama Akhi Larry,

Sorry about the delay in this response - I've just been numb this week, as we all have, at the horrible loss of life in New York. May God strengthen those families who lost loved ones and may He continually watch over our great nation in the days ahead.

About Nataph - the Aramaic language shares this word with Hebrew, although it is spelled with a Teth rather than a Taw. (P=n rather than Ptn)

From what I can tell, it is not used at all in the New Testament. I found it in the Peshitta Psalms (68:8).

Shlama Akhi Paul,

Thanks for your response, and I understand about having to "pull yourself back together" after these 'kamikaze-style' terrorist tactics perpetrated on our nation. In a way I hate to hear about the possibility of Afghanistan getting bombed because I've heard that desolation and poverty exist on every hand already in that country.I've also heard that Pakistani spies do their job extremely well. Maybe this will be our "ace-in-the-hole" as we say in America, but God is an "EVER PRESENT HELP in time of trouble" and "He will keep him in perfect peace who's mind is stayed on Thee".
This word 'nataph' seems to be a lot more in use in the Hebrew. I've seen it listed in Strong's in Judges 5:4, Job 29:22 & 36:27, Psalm 68:8 (as you've said), Proverbs 5:3, Song of Sol. 4:11 & 5:5,13, Ezek. 20:46 & 21:2, Joel 3:18, Amos 7:16 & 9:13, Micah 2:6(3 times)& 2:11(2 times), and Zech. 13:3. This word has a Qamets under the letter nuwn and a pattach under the letter teyth. The entry just below it looks just like it only it has a qamets under both nuwn and teyth and means a 'drop'; {specifically} an aromatic gum (probably stacte)

Assyrian \ã-'sir-é-an\ adj or n (1998)   1:  descendants of the ancient empire of Ashur   2:  the Assyrians, although representing but one single nation as the direct heirs of the ancient Assyrian Empire, are now doctrinally divided, inter sese, into five principle ecclesiastically designated religious sects with their corresponding hierarchies and distinct church governments, namely, Church of the East, Chaldean, Maronite, Syriac Orthodox and Syriac Catholic.  These formal divisions had their origin in the 5th century of the Christian Era.  No one can coherently understand the Assyrians as a whole until he can distinguish that which is religion or church from that which is nation -- a matter which is particularly difficult for the people from the western world to understand; for in the East, by force of circumstances beyond their control, religion has been made, from time immemorial, virtually into a criterion of nationality.   3:  the Assyrians have been referred to as Aramaean, Aramaye, Ashuraya, Ashureen, Ashuri, Ashuroyo, Assyrio-Chaldean, Aturaya, Chaldean, Chaldo, ChaldoAssyrian, ChaldoAssyrio, Jacobite, Kaldany, Kaldu, Kasdu, Malabar, Maronite, Maronaya, Nestorian, Nestornaye, Oromoye, Suraya, Syriac, Syrian, Syriani, Suryoye, Suryoyo and Telkeffee. — Assyrianism verb
