Galatians 3:15-17

Hi all!

In reading Victor Alexanders translation of galatians, I notice that he translates the above verses slightly differently to the English versions I have read.
In particular victor relates the 430 years to be the period from the writing down of the law to the coming of Christ. The traditional view seems to be that this period relates to the period from the giving of the promose to the giving of the law (although there seems to be some difference between theologians as to exactly how this is applied).
is the aramaic used here (a) ambiguous, (b)In line with Victors translation, (c) in line with the english/greek?

here is Victors translation and comments. (paul you can delete the other post if you like. I meant to tack it on this thread anyway)

15. Brethren, I speak as a human being, the Covenant of the Son of Man that I
testify to, let no human being denigrate it or change anything in it.*
16. To Abraham and to his seed, He deeded the Kingdom. And He did not say,
"And to your seed," as in the plural, except, "to your seed," as in the singular, that
being the Christ.
17. This then I say, that the Covenant from Old was fulfilled by God through
Christ,* the Law which came to us four hundred and thirty years
could not degrade and void the Kingdom universe.]*

*3:15 Note: Only the Ancient Aramaic retains the correct meaning of this passage.
*3:17.1 Lit. Ar. idiomatic construction retained: The Old Covenant or the Old
Testament was fulfilled through Christ.
*3:17.2 Paul sets the date when the Law was recorded at 430 B.C.

That translation, in my opinion, is wrong.

The context itself shows that Paul is contrasting the 0nklwm (the 'promise' to Abraham) with 0swmn (the 'law' that came after), and how the law does not nullify the promise. This is my understanding of the matter.

According to the text you quoted above, Victor seems to have missed the word rtb (after) in verse 17.

Interesting cognate accusative here! 0nklwm Klmt0 (Both verb and object are from the same root Klm )

Rob, thanks for your reply!

I have been doing some research into the geneologies and chronology of the bible and the ancient world for a little while.(It's more complicated than I expected, and probably too much to go into at the present).
However one thing seems clear. If the peshitta has come down "without change or revision" (and I have no reason to doubt this), then verses such as the above, and Acts 13.20 and Lukes inclusion of Cainan in his geneology (otherwise only in the LXX and the book of jubilees), will be helpful in clearing up some of the apparent problems (at least).
However as has been demonstrated here recently this will not be the only area where study of the peshitta will prove helpful.
