According to a report received from Bakuba, Mesopotamia, the late Paulus Mar Shimun, Patriarch of thy Assyrian Christians, who died at Bakuba, in Mesopotamia, on May 9, has been suceeeded, according to ancient custom, by his nephew. The new prelate was duly elected and consecrated as Ishai Mar Shimun, in spite of the fact that he is only 13 years of age, extreme youth being no disqualification for the highest office in the Assyrian Church. The title Mar Shimun, which is borne by each Assyrian Patriarch in succession, is considered to refer to the claim advanced by the family to which the Patriarchate is vested to be descended from St. Peter, who was certainly a married man and is revered locally as St. Simon.
