Amendment Offered to Protect Relations with Turkey
Members of a House committee, concerned about protecting relations between
the United States and Turkey, voted today to amend legislation that would
officially recognize the 1915 Armenian genocide. The amendment offered by
Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., and adopted by voice vote clarifies that the
legislation (H Res 596) is directed at actions taken by the Ottoman Empire,
not modern-day Turkey. Today's markup by the International Relations
Committee sparked loud protests from the Turks. The legislation refers to
events from 1915 to 1923, when 1.5 million Armenians were driven from their
homeland and died. Approval of the measure would benefit Rep. James E.
Rogan, R-Calif., who is in a tough re-election campaign in a district with a
large Armenian population. A long list of amendments is pending as the
markup continues.
