Italian Parliament Passes Genocide Resolution PRESS RELEASE
CONTACT: Joan Ablett MEDIA ADVISORY The Armenian Assembly of America has learned from sources in Italy that the Italian Parliament, invoking the recent European Parliament's action, today unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Today's action follows on the heels of the European Parliament's request this week that Turkey recognize the Armenian Genocide, prior to consideration of its admission to the European Union. Last week, Pope John Paul II issued a landmark statement affirming the Genocide, shortly after the French Senate voted to adopt a similar resolution. Ironically, the US House of Representatives bowed to Turkish government threats last month and acceded to President Clinton's request that it not proceed with a vote on its Genocide Resolution. The Resolution, which was expected to win House approval, affirmed the US record detailing the country's leadership role in calling the Armenian Genocide to the world's attention. Timeline: · 11/15 - The European Parliament passed a Resolution calling on Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide. · 11/10 - Pope John Paul II issued a joint statement with the Armenian Catholicos Karekin II, which mentioned the following: ""The Armenian Genocide has been a prelude to the horrors which followed: the two world wars, innumerable regional conflicts and deliberately organized campaigns of extermination that have ended the lives of millions of believers." · 11/8 - French Senate voted 164 to 40 for the bill that says la "France publicly recognizes the Armenian Genocide of 1915".
