Turkey rejects Cyprus peace talks The Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash has said he is withdrawing from United Nations-sponsored talks aimed at reuniting the divided island. Mr Denktash said the UN''s refusal to accept the existence of a Turkish state in Northern Cyprus made further talks a waste of time. Mr Denktash and the Greek Cypriot leader, Glafkos Clerides, have been holding proximity talks in which they negotiate through UN mediators but never meet.
They ended a fifth round in Geneva earlier this month without making any
progress.
