Experts suggest Armenia has territorial claims over Turkey

Foreign policy experts draw attention to the fact that Armenia has territorial claims over Turkey, citing certain phrases in the Armenian Constitution and Declaration of Independence, the Anatolia news agency reported yesterday.

Many believe that Armenia's territorial claims are the main reason why the Armenian administration and lobbyists are pushing for global recognition of the alleged genocide of Armenians that took place towards the end of the Ottoman era.

The Armenian Declaration of Independence, issued in August 1990, describes eastern Anatolia as a part of western Armenia. Article 13 of the Armenian Constitution, describing the national emblem, stipulates that Mt. Agri (Ararat), located in northeastern Anatolia, is included therein.

Efforts to get an alleged Armenian genocide recognized in certain Western countries and institutions have bourne fruits in Italy and France. The European Parliament, too, has approved a resolution calling on Turkey to recognize the alleged genocide. In the United States, on the other hand, such efforts failed at the last minute when a resolution seeking to recognize the "genocide" was withdrawn in the House of Representatives.

Turkey has severed its ties with Armenia, believing that country's administration to be behind attempts to get the alleged genocide recognized. Experts say it is landlocked Armenia -- suffering from severe economic problems -- that has been badly affected by broken ties with Turkey.
