Turkey: Priest on Trial World Briefing EUROPE
An Assyrian priest in Diyarbakir went on trial, accused of "provoking
hatred" by telling reporters that his Christian minority had been the victim
of Turkish genocide. The priest, Father Yusuf Akbulut, could face three
years in jail. He testified that he was explaining church elders' views that
Assyrian Christians were systematically killed at the turn of the century
and that he had not expected the views to be published.
