Greek, Turkish Foreign Ministers to Meet in Skopje ATHENS, Feb 19, 2001 -- (Reuters) Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and his Turkish counterpart Ismail Cem will meet on Thursday on the sidelines of a Balkan summit in Skopje, the Greek foreign ministry said on Monday. Papandreou and Cem, seen as the architects of the recent improvement in bilateral relations, will meet on Thursday evening, before Friday's summit in the former Yugoslav Republic of [deleted], ministry spokesman Panos Beglitis told reporters. Relations between the two traditional rivals improved after destructive earthquakes in both countries prompted a mutual wave of sympathy in 1999. But progress has since snagged on long-standing disputes over the divided island of Cyprus and territorial rights, and a series of confidence-building measures have been put on hold.
Friday's summit brings together Balkan leaders to discuss regional developments and cooperation.
