Turkish foreign minister to visit Washington WASHINGTON, Feb 28 (AFP) - Turkey's Foreign Minister Ismail Cem is to visit Washington late next month for talks with the Bush administration, relating mainly to Iraq, a State Department spokesman said Wednesday. During his US visit scheduled for March 30, Cem will talk with US Secretary of State Colin Powell, whom he met briefly Tuesday while the two visited NATO headquarters in Brussels, spokesman Richard Boucher said. Assistant Secretary of State Ed Walker was in Ankara Wednesday, where he is due to hold talks with government officials on the Iraqi situation Thursday, Boucher noted. Washington wants Turkey to place a pipeline used for transporting Iraqi oil under United Nations supervision, in order to monitor income generated under the regime of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
Agreement from Turkey on the Iraqi pipeline would follow a pledge by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to Powell this week that Syria will place its controversial oil pipeline from Iraq under United Nations control.
