Yerevan, US Deputy Commander-in-Chief, US Forces in Europe, Carlton Fulford held talks with Armenian leaders on Thursday [22 March] on the normalization of relations between Armenia and Turkey.

Summing up the results of his two-day visit to Yerevan, the US general said that Turkey was an US partner. America has had long-term effective cooperation with Turkey, he added.

Fulford said that he and Armenian leaders had discussed how to convince Turkey to start talks with Armenia in order to put an end to conflicts and begin cooperation. He said the United States would continue contacts with Turkish and Armenian leaders in order to find solutions and settle disagreements, the general said.

Turkey is interested in ensuring peace in Nagornyy Karabakh and realizes that
peace and stability in the region will meet its national interests, Fulford said.

The general expressed the hope that both sides would succeed in settling the Nagornyy Karabakh conflict soon. He noted that only peaceful settlement would
allow US armed forces to take part in cooperation programmes with the countries of the region.

The general recalled that the United States was involved in demining programmes in Nagornyy Karabakh.
