Article 2 of the International Declaration of Human Rights (December, 1948), states...

"Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty."

We draw your attention to the scores of attacks against Assyrians in the United Nations administered "Safe Haven" in northern Iraq including rapes, abductions of young girls, murders, attacks on Churches and clergy, cultural and linguistic persecution, and land expropriations. These crimes which have occurred in the past several years have had the cumulative effect of terrorizing the indigenous Assyrian communities in northern Iraq, southeastern Turkey and Syria. The premeditated and well established pattern of directing attacks against Assyrians and then steadfastly denying justice to the victims by the regional governments has led to the gradual exodus of Assyrians from their ancestral homes and villages.

These atrocities have the effect of galvanizing the Assyrian community in the Diaspora to seek international recognition of a safe haven for Assyrians as a necessity for Assyrian survival in the Middle East. A territorially delineated Assyrian safe haven within predominantly Assyrian areas would allow the recognition and protection of Assyrians, their lands, schools, and churches. Perhaps within an Assyrian safe haven, Assyrian families could feel secure enough to continue to live in a land inhabited by their ancestors for several millennia.

We therefore request from the United Nations, the U.S. Administration, various other governmental bodies, and the International Human Rights Organizations to begin immediate and comprehensive investigations to bring justice and security for the Assyrian Nation and to begin to devise a lasting solution for the Assyrians living in their ancestral homeland.

Sincerely,

the Assyrians
